Fall Is a Great Time to Paint the Interior of Your Home
Once the weather starts cooling down in Walla Walla, most home improvement projects move indoors. And that raises a question we hear often: Is fall a good time to paint the inside of your house?
The answer is yes. In fact, fall and winter can be some of the best times of year for interior painting.
If you’ve been looking at tired walls, scuffed trim, outdated colors, or a room that simply needs a change, here are a few reasons not to wait until spring.
Comfortable, Consistent Indoor Temperatures
Good paint results depend on reasonably stable temperature and humidity. During fall and winter, your home is already being heated to a comfortable, fairly consistent temperature—which creates a controlled environment for interior painting.
Unlike exterior work, there’s no need to worry about a sudden rainstorm, blazing afternoon sun, or rapidly changing outdoor conditions. Once we’re inside, we can control the environment and keep the project moving.
Do You Need to Open the Windows When Painting Indoors?
This is another common question, especially once it gets cold outside.
Ventilation is helpful during any painting project, but that doesn’t mean every window in the house needs to stay wide open all day. Today’s quality interior paints are available in low- and zero-VOC formulations with considerably less odor than older paints.
Depending on the project, we can use ventilation, air movement, and selective window opening to keep the space comfortable while the paint dries. You don’t have to freeze the house just to get a room painted.
Fall Is a Great Time to Fix the Little Things, Too
A fresh coat of paint looks best when the surface underneath it is in good condition.
Interior painting is a good opportunity to take care of all those small flaws you’ve gradually stopped noticing: nail holes, drywall cracks, damaged corners, scuffed baseboards, uneven patches, old caulking, or trim that has seen better days.
Good preparation may not be the exciting part of painting, but it’s usually what separates an average paint job from one that looks truly finished.
Get Your Home Ready for the Holidays
Fall painting also has an obvious benefit: the holidays are coming.
You don’t necessarily need to repaint the entire house. A dining room, kitchen, entry, guest room, living room, or powder room can make a surprisingly big difference in how your home feels.
If the walls are in good condition, interior painting is also one of the fastest ways to dramatically change a room without undertaking a larger remodel.
New wall color, freshly painted trim, and a repaired ceiling can make an older space feel clean and new again.
What Interior Rooms Should You Paint First?
If you’re not ready to tackle the whole house, start with the rooms you use—or see—the most.
Living rooms and kitchens generally have the biggest visual impact. Entries and hallways take a lot of abuse and often show wear first. Bedrooms can be transformed with color relatively quickly, while bathrooms benefit from fresh, washable finishes designed for moisture and frequent cleaning.
And don’t overlook trim and doors. Sometimes repainting worn baseboards, door casings, and interior doors makes almost as much difference as repainting the walls.
Is Winter a Good Time for Interior Painting, Too?
Absolutely.
Once exterior painting season winds down in the Walla Walla Valley, interior projects are a natural fit for the colder months. Painting, drywall repair, trim work, cabinet painting, and other interior improvements can all be completed while winter is doing its thing outside.
There’s also something satisfying about improving the rooms you spend the most time in during the season when you’re actually spending more time indoors.
